To tag someone on Facebook who isn’t your friend, you can either mention them in a post or photo, or tag them in a comment on a public post. When you tag someone, their name becomes a clickable link to their profile, and they’ll receive a notification.
To tag someone in a post:
- Start a new post: Click on “What’s on your mind?” or similar to create a new post.
- Use the “@” symbol: Type the “@” symbol followed by the person’s name.

- Complete and post: Finish your post and click “Post”.
To tag someone in a photo:

To tag someone in a comment:

- Use the “@” symbol: In the comment section, type the “@” symbol followed by the person’s name.
- Select the correct person: Choose the person from the suggestions.
- Post your comment: Your comment, with the tagged person, will be visible to anyone who can see the original post.
Important notes:
- If the person has privacy settings that restrict who can tag them, the tag might not work.
If you tag someone in a post or comment, they will receive a notification, even if they are not your friend. If the person is not your friend and you tag them in a post, the post’s privacy might be expanded to include their friends, depending on the original privacy settings.
To tag someone on Instagram who isn’t your friend, you can tag them in a post or story, as long as their account is public. If their account is private, you can still tag them if you are also following them, or if they’ve allowed you to tag them in their settings.
To tag someone in a post:
- Go to your profile: Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Find the post: Go to the post where you want to add the tag.
- Edit the post: Tap the three dots in the top right corner and select “Edit”.
- Tag people: Tap “Tag people”.
- Tap on the photo: Tap the location on the photo where you want to add the tag.
- Enter the username: Start typing the person’s username, and select them from the dropdown menu.
- Done: Tap “Done” in the top right corner to confirm.
To tag someone in a story:
- Create a story: Swipe right from your feed to create a new story.
- Add a photo or video: Select or create your content.
- Use the @ symbol: Type “@” followed by the person’s username.
- Select from the menu: Choose the correct username from the dropdown menu.
- Done: Tap “Done”.
Important considerations:
- Privacy settings: If the person you’re trying to tag has a private account and doesn’t follow you, you may not be able to tag them unless they’ve allowed it in their settings.
